Help using our Document Viewer

Prerequisites

Some images require Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to be viewed.

We recommend you download the latest version of Adobe Reader. The notes provided here are based on Adobe Reader 8.0.

If you do not already have Acrobat Reader installed then use the link provided and follow the download and installation instructions provide on the Adobe site.

Accessibility

If your browser has javascript disabled and you need to use the functionality provided on the document viewer page, you will need to click on the PDF button on the toolbar above the document.

Depending on your Adobe Reader settings, the selected document will open up either in :

To change the Adobe Reader setting so that it opens in the Adobe Reader application:-

  1. Select Preferences from the Edit menu
  2. Select Internet from the categories box
  3. Make sure "Display PDF in browser" is not selected
  4. Click ok and close down the Adobe Reader application
  5. Also closed down any internet sessions you have open
  6. You might have to restart your computer

Whatever window is open you will be able to use the functionality without javascript.

Keyboard Shortcuts

If you do not have a mouse or are able to use one, then you will need to select the PDF button the toolbar above the document.

Depending on your Adobe Reader settings, the selected document will open up either in :

The whole range of keyboard shortcuts are available on the help pages in Adobe Reader which can be used on the document.

For example for zooming we suggest you show the navigation panel by pressing F4 (F4 will hide and show the navigation panel). This option will show you all the pages in the document as thumbnails on the left hand side of the screen. CTRL Y can then be used to select the zoom magnification you require. The thumbnail will have a red square showing the zoomed area in regards to the whole document. CTRL +equal sign can also be used to zoom in and CTRL+hyphen to zoom out.

Measuring will only work if the PDF creator has enabled the measuring functionality.

Screen Layout

Scanned Images will be presented in the Document Viewer. All other images will be presented in PDF format where possible or in their native application where a PDF version is not available.

The document viewer is divided horizontally into two sections. The upper section show thumbnails of the individual document pages. Document Pages can be viewed by selecting the relevant thumbnail.

The second section shows a large picture of the scaled image and provides a number of icons to manipulate the image.

Understanding the icons

First Page icon First Page: this button will show the first page of the document.

Back One Page icon Back One Page: this button will show the previous page of the document. If you are already on the first page this button will have no affect.

Page Selection Page Selection: a drop down list of all pages within the document allowing any page within the document to be selected and viewed.

Back One Page icon Forward One Page: this button will show the next page of the document. If you are already on the last page this button will have no affect.

Last Page icon Last Page: this button will show the last page of the document.

Zoom into Selected Area icon Zoom into Selected Area: this button will enable you to zoom to a particular area of the map. Before selecting this button you must mark out the area you wish to zoom into on the image. To mark an area click on the image and, holding the mouse button down, drag the mouse over the image to draw a box. Release the mouse button to fix the box and then use the Zoom into Selected Area icon to zoom in.

Zoom Out icon Zoom Out: this button will zoom out of area previously zoom in on.

Display Whole Page Display Whole Page: this button will display the whole document page.

Rotate Image Left (90 degrees) Rotate Image Left (90 degrees): this button will rotate the image left through 90 degrees.

Rotate Image Right (90 degrees) Rotate Image Right (90 degrees): this button will rotate the image right through 90 degrees.

Toggle Measurement Mode On/Off Toggle Measurement Mode On/Off: this button will toggle the measurement mode on or off. When Measurement mode is on a box will be displayed around the icon to show measurement mode is on.

NB. This mode must be turned off if you wish to zoom into an of the image.

When Measurement Mode is turn on distances and areas of the image can be measured.

To measure a distance click a point on the image where you wish the measurement to start then click again on the point you wish the measurement to end. After clicking on the end point a red line will be drawn showing the distance being measured and the distance will be displayed, whilst the mouse cursor is over the image, on the left hand side of the screen. If you click on the image again a further point will be drawn and measurements will be provided for the total length of the line (red). This will be the total distance between point 1 and point 2 and point 2 and point 3. This process can be repeated as many times as required. When more than two points are drawn the area between the first and the last points will be automatically completed by a blue line. In this case measurements will be provide for the total distance of the red and blue lines and the area contained within the measurements. To measure a new area / distance you must clear any existing measurements using the clear measurements icon

NB. This scale used will be whatever the scale was set to when the last measurement point was added.

Clear Measurements Clear Measurements: this button will remove the existing measurements from the image.

Set Scale for Image Set Scale for Image: this button allows you to set the scale of the image by drawing a line between two points and specifying the actual distance between the two points. To override the default scale, select this icon then select two points on the image using the mouse. You will then be prompted to enter 'The Real distance in meters of the drawn line', the revised scale will automatically be recalculated based on the distance provided

Scale Scale: shows the current scale of the image. The scale can be changed by entering a new value in the box. This will affect the scale of any new measurements.

The following icons are used to scroll the image left, right, up and down. If the whole image is displayed this will have no affect. If you are zoomed into and area of the image the on selecting these icons the image will be scrolled in the appropriate direction.

Move Image to the Left Move Image to the left: this button will scroll the image to the left.

Move Image Up Move Image Up: this button will scroll the image up.

Move Image Down Move Image Down: this button will scroll the image down.

Move Image to the Right Move Image to the Right: this button will scroll the image right.

PDF:View PDF in new window this button will open the document as a PDF in a new window.

Print current image Print current image: this button will open the current image in a new window to allow it to be printed.

Known Problems

If a problem occurs whilst viewing PDF documents in Firefox, please right-click on the PDF button and choose the 'Save Link As' option. This will allow you to save the PDF file to a specified directory. The file can then be viewed in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
